Marvellously Welsh episode – bendigedig! – listening whilst baking. The Mari Llwyd is something I grew up with in the South Wales Valleys in the 70s – on New Year’s Day we would tie a balloon to a broom, draw a face on it and cover it with an old bedsheet then traipse around the neighbours calling ‘Please can you help Mari Llywd’ – the grown ups would throw coins and sweets for us to fight over 🙂 It’s amazing it survived as a tradition in the Rhondda which was a NewYork-esque melting pot of cultures.
