Do you still read Blogs?

Do you still read Blogs?

I mean, the fact that you’re reading this suggests you do, but I’m wondering how many people still like Pagan blog posts? It feels like the blog has given way to the vlog and people connect far more through video on social media and YouTube, but I still love reading the thoughts and feelings of my fellow Pagans through the written (typed) word.

Having spent the last 10 years immersed in the Mabinogi I feel like I’m coming out the other side, and the Pagan world has changed once more. I’m seeing far less blog posts from the people I once followed, but seeing them more in short videos. But here’s the thing, those short videos Don’t seem to be saying as much as the blog post once said. They feel more like ‘content’ than thought-through, well articulated, articles.

I miss blogs.

So, what the hell, I’m sure I will begin to post more video content on social media, but I also want to get back to writing more regularly here on the blog, and on my Patreon site.

The thing is… will people still read and engage with it? I hope so.

Let’s see…

100 responses to “Do you still read Blogs?”

  1. I read most Pagan blogs depending on the subject matter so as to know what’s going on and to stay connected.

  2. I agree with this, Damh! There’s something more, I don’t know, intimate and personal about a blog post. So, I shall continue to read and I will comment more often, too!

    Blessings to you!

  3. Well I still read them Dave. I don’t much like so-called “social media” and it in no way replaces the written word for me and never will do.

I hope you will continue to write your blog here.

See you and Cerri next month hopefully. 🙂

  4. Hello Damh the Bard
Mmmm, I listen to your monthly Druid cast when you send out the email, but I don’t think I have come across your blog , where will I find it please? ✨️. (We’re coming to see you tomorrow evening – very excited) .
Warm, tree lined wishes – Lorraine.

  5. Hello from SC
I for one enjoy the written word. I feel the content conjuring the imagination in far more ways than the video approaches.
Thank you for continuing in writing out your messages.

  6. I love your Blog, though I don’t usually comment. I prefer to read quickly and have no patience for videos or podcasts.
I wish people would continue to blog or write articles, I get a lot from those.
Thank you so much for yours !

  7. I still enjoy the written word, but many people find it easier to listen to songs and poetry. I think the blog and printed hardcover books are still vital.

  8. I prefer blogs. I always read and enjoy yours. Gives me permission to slow down and connect.

  9. Yes, keep blogging, your thoughts and insights are worth sharing and therefore worth taking the time to read.
Videos have their place but as you say they are shorts and quite frankly as you say are about content and little else.
Release your songs on video, why not, I have just published one today and am waiting to see if it flies…..but I’m anticipating anything stratosphonic!!
    Andy

  10. I prefer blogs to videos, tbh. Most people talk too slow and/or waffle.
The only time I enjoy video type things is when the person doing them is showing us how to do something – prepare a tincture, for example, or make something arts & crafty, that sort of thing. I keep all my favourite blogs in a folder so if I ever want to, I can reread them. So, as far as I’m concerned, blog away!

  11. A good read with interesting outlooks on life help, ground me and makes me feel like there is real people and real ideas still out there. It would be great to hear what you have to say about the modern pagan world through your knowledgeable experienced eyes

    • I miss blogs too. I think we need videos to help us find new blogs to read sometimes, but videos seem to focus on catchy over conversations.

  12. Keep on blogging!! I frequently distracted if I’m watching a video ( attention span of an orange kitten !)xx

  13. Dear Damh,

Yes, I do still read blogs. I look forward to DruidCast every month. I’m also happy to read any blog content you post!

    Peace,

    ~ Mark

  14. I love reading what you write, Damh, and agree that video, while great for some things like showing us forest walks, don’t offer what a thoughtful blog offers- especially yours. So I hope you’ll keep them coming.

  15. I still love reading your blogs Dave. At my advanced age, I prefer to read your words as I find other ways of communication gets me sometimes very confused ….in the same way trying banking on line ! I like to read and save them to read again if I forget some of them. Looking forward to Saturday seeing your f ace and hearing you sing and speak to me. xxx

  16. I trending more towards the Vlogs these days. To be honest if a blog is too long, I usually don’t finish reading it…

  17. I vastly prefer reading blogs and articles to videos. A moment to slow down and invest quietly vs the excess of outside stimuli that’s part of daily life is therapeutic. I’m also definitely someone who understands by reading much better than by watching or listening, and rereading is ezpz vs backing up on a video a time or two.

  18. I have found few blogs to follow to be honest and I tend towards the vlogs because they have the aspect of oral transmission. I prefer to hear what a person has to share, see the expressions on their faces. Reading even the best of blogs has room for misinterpretation just as much as a poorly written text message. And I don’t even think it is a matter of quality either. Someone may be able to share a very important point, but the vlog, blog, etc. all have poor production quality, doesn’t change the importance of the point.

As a consumer of these, I’ll go where the good stuff is! If blogs are where you feel most comfortable, then I’ll meet you there!

  19. I still like reading. There is so much visual it’s nice to read at your own pace. Keep doing it!

  20. Hi Damh…I enjoy blogs; sometimes the video element actually detracts from the verbal content…peace, John

  21. I read a few, but mostly listen to podcasts, and I’m in the old demographic.

    Love your works.

    Ken

  22. I read an old-school, non-pagan blog daily and am more likely to read a blog post than watch a video – mainly because the blog post is always there to find if I can’t get to it straight away, whereas a video can disappear from my facebook feed between clicking on it to watch and returning to comment!

I also find You Tube notifications to be pretty non-existant and probably miss an awful lot of interesting stuff. Despite subscribing to Cerri’s gardening channel, for example, I didn’t know there were new videos until I went hunting months later. 🙁

I always find your content though, as you post your own notifications.

  23. While I listen to podcasts frequently, I do prefer blogs. I read at my own pace and pause to consider.

  24. I absolutely love blogs. It is my (not so secret) pleasure to be able to sit down and read them. I can get too distracted with videos and I am not able to get that personal feeling from them. Please continue the blogs!!

  25. Please keep writing, it’s like it’s becoming a dying art, especially writing by an actual human being rather than artificial pseudothought!

  26. I do like blogs. It feels more like a personal sharing of thoughts. Vlogs can seem more like a performance, although I love Cerri’s alotment ones and when you two take us to sites I will probably never visit myself.Look forward to reading more of your blogs. Damh.

  27. Yes, love reading your blogs. Not so keen on blogs, like you say, they seem more like sound bites than well thought out discussion.

  28. I do. I don’t follow very many blogs, but it’s still my preferred format. I don’t enjoy watching videos frequently, I completely skip following vlogs or most video content. I find it disruptive to have to stop and find headphones or find a place where the sound won’t interfere with other people around me. I mostly will only watch videos for music or how-to instructionals.

  29. I do still read blog post, but I also find myself watching vlogs more often these days. As far as quality of either goes, it depends entirely upon the creator – case in point, the Green Grimore is one of my favorites.

  30. Certainly keep up with the blogs I feel far more connected to the more thoughtful written word than I do to most vlogs yours excluded as I feel most of them are just stuff used to pad out the things that are the actual content

  31. I’ve largely abandoned social media because of the amount of artificial and advertising content. I have no time to watch videos, especially when they are continually interrupted with more advertising – YouTube, I’m looking at you. I prefer my blog list of interesting people writing about a range of topics. My own blog is more about my photography, but occasionally I’ll get a considered opinion in on stuff like Druidry, animism and what the Hel is going on in the world, lol.

  32. Being a pre-social media person, to whom blogging is still a ‘brand new thing’, I warm to the written word. I can understand the appeal of videos, however I do agree, they are shorter on deep meaningful comments and exploration of topic, leading one to ponder and discuss.
A written blog is like a physical book and can be easily read again and interesting sentences picked out. I find it harder to catch and retain spoken information and at some point it still has to be planned for.
    All the best Damh,
    Lorraine M

  33. I enjoy your blogs. I don’t feel such a true connection with a vlog. The experience is different.

  34. I watch a lot of blogs but I prefer a well written blog that I can re read after I have fully digested the content clogs just pass the time but blogs seem to impart information and seem to be more from the heart as opposed to just something to fill another video.

  35. Yes, I actually look forward to them. I feel the shorter vlog is missing something, they just don’t feel the same. Then again, I am older so it could be generational thing.

  36. I like blogs for just the reason you state, depth. These short videos play to diminished attention spans, but I still like a good read.

  37. I prefer to read a blog vs watch a vlog. And I also don’t need pictures, I make my own in my head. I think there has been a decline in pagan blogs, because I struggle to find links or newsletters to add to my pagan group. Please keep writing! I tend to marathon read my saved newsletters, so it’s like a series, lol.

  38. Hi Dave, I still like blogs and would certainly be interested in reading your blogs, and hope you get lots of support.
    Blessings, Paige

  39. Thanks for this, I’m really sorry, but don’t use a lot of internet connections, though do see your emails! I love listening to your music, so really appreciate all you’ve done to share the music!

  40. I love blogs. I think especially for more nuanced discussions or topics that are more specific or need extra time, blogs are the better option!

  41. I do still read blogs, and like music that comes in albums rather than streamed! Videos – especially on short format sites like Instagram and tiktok – feel like tasters for ideas rather than exploring the actual ideas themselves. I hope you do continue to update your blog!

  42. I still love the written word. I often wont bother watching a video and feel cheated if there are not words.

    • Don’t ever stop Dave. Yours is one of a few blogs, and other media that I keep up with these days. Witty, informative and full of great anecdotes. You, John Beckett and Jason Mankey are top of a short list. Cheers Mr. Bard!

  43. Hi l will read your blogs l have felt a great shift in the pagan community do we blame it on covid or is it just that as elders we feel a shift in the balance our time to step back let the younger members take their place . I still great the morning l watch the sky at night l wander around my garden and give thanks for for a new day

  44. Yes to the Blog! Although I must admit video content is just quicker because in this, unfortunately, very busy life – it’s easier to listen to video, not necessarily watch it, but listen whilst doing other things ..haha. So a recorded blog is great. I do love reading, but emails I often quickly skim over or ”get back to ” when have time, and then I don’t!!

Anyway, love your musings and your music and looking forward to seeing you at Solskin Festival!

  45. Much like you I prefer the depth and meaning of blogs and am quite sad that they are becoming less and less common, when I first started reading your this, I panicked “oh no! Dahm is going to stop the blog!” But I’m glad That’s not the case!

The thing with blogs, is that I find they are just as nourishing for the person writing them!

I look forward to reading future blogs

  46. I really enjoy your Blogs, in fact I have for years from the start, I would be gutted if you stopped posting. I do not really follow many people at all, but I have always found yours so special and beautifully written that they have always been a pleasure and joy to read. I am not into social media, never have been really. You have no idea just how special and talented your writing is. I prefer it to the vlogs which are not for me. Its a bit like kindle versus an actual book. Spirit and soul written by a word Smith (ha ha see what I accidentally did there!) is such a gift. I know your life is changing and evolving, your dedication to everything and every one shines through. I for one will always love to read what you write. Thank you Dave. Bright Blessings to you with your Bardic heart and spirit, Cerri and Oscar. May your adventures carry you and inspire you and your pen flow with creativity always. /|\ jr

  47. Personally, I’d much rather get my information, whatever it may be, by reading rather than from a talking head on a video. I’ve been TV-free by choice for many years, and prefer it that way. Unless it’s a cat video or a music video by a band or individual artist I like, and not a staged or scripted one, I dislike videos intensely and almost never watch them. And it irritates me no end how so much of social media has been co-opted by videos instead of readable posts. So please continue sharing your thoughts in readable form, Damh. Thanks.

  48. Very rarely watch youtube shorts, but will always read your written pieces. Perfect for short break when at work. Thank you for the time you take out of your busy life to share your thoughts.

  49. I quite like your blog and hope you will keep it up. I prefer written to video, but will basically read/ listen to whatever you post.
Your house concerts and blogs are a source of humor, wisdom, & basic sanity in these times of chaos, which I deeply appreciate.
good thoughts to you & yours.

  50. Please keep writing your blogs. We need a chance to stop and think for a while, to feel that we are sharing with someone whose thoughts align with ours and to not feel pressured into going onto the next 20 second attention grabber!

  51. Definitely prefet a more thorough deep dive into the well written blog. Too many shorts, reels and any other description is just emphasising the inability of people to focus for any real length of time. Everything is done as fast as possible, shopping, research, entertainmemt. We need to slow down and linger. So yes definitely keep writing Damh. To slow down in a world that glorifies exhaustion is a radical and vital form of self love

  52. I like the written word too, and yes, I agree about social media “content” rather than deeper explorations that come with more meaningful writings. Please continue to write
PS I only started my yoga pose blogs recently but will continue every new and full moon until the Autumn. Website in the box below

  53. When I used to work in an office I would often read a backlog of blog postings during my lunchbreak. The likes of Youtube were blocked, and other video playbacks could be overhead by colleagues. Text maintained privacy and didn’t impinge on anybody else.

Ultimately the written word always makes a more lasting impression than a video or audio.

  54. Hi Damh, yes, I still read blogs. I agree that vlogs are more popular now, but I still prefer the written word.

  55. I feel the written word connects in a way that social media doesn’t, well for me anyway,it encourages you to think and explore on a different level and you can sit and take your time to digest and reflect.
I often go back and read an archived blog too if Ive missed one.
I love the way you write, I can imagine your voice as I read, and you write as you speak. So thank you Damh, for sharing your thoughts with humor and wisdom from your heart.

  56. I actually prefer to read an occasional well written email or a blog post than a 30 second video that really has no meaningful content. But I may be a little old-fashioned.

  57. Blogs are better for me. They allow you to reread bits that might need more understanding or that you want to keep in your memory. They are also so much better for anyone with hearing loss.

  58. Damh,
vlog and blog have their space. The vlog chimes in more with the oral tradition of the druids, the blog funnily enough more with the written expression coming after (or parallel) them.
Plus on a bad hair day probably a blog is better .
    Keep doing both!
    Best,
    Tiny Drachen

  59. Absolutely
I still read them burnI’m missing good blogs.
Some of my faves are now on Substack but again not are not as long nor with the depth they once wrote in.
Or you get far enough in to think, this is a great piece and then a paywall shits down the post.
I’m not saying subscriptions are a negative but be clear at beginning of post!!!
I write on there but make it clear when a post requires a subscription

  60. I prefer to read things like blogs. Substack and Patreon have both seemed to become more popular for the written word as far as I can tell although in many cases individuals have some material available for free and some for a paid subscription. I hope you continue to write blog posts

  61. Damh, Please keep doing what you do. You are a peaceful forest glen in an otherwise chaotic world. Sometimes its nice to know there is a glen to stop by and sit awhile.

  62. I still enjoy reading over video content.

As you say,the written word is so much more considered. I like to take my time and go back over a piece of writing a few times to ensure I have fully absorbed the writers message.

I work with video a lot in my world as I design digital learning and filming/post production is part of my job but I also work with static content: art, graphic design and the written word.

Funny really, as bards, or even just as followers of a celtic tradition, you would think that we would champion the spoken word and, truth be told, I do enjoy listening to story tellers and ofcourse music, but I also like to just immerse myself in the language, wallow in a sentence or even just a phrase and take the time that writing allows to just be with the words.

  63. Yes, I prefer blogs. Videos are fine but… I love books and the written word. Please continue. I enjoy every one of your blogs and have saved them to reread.

  64. I really prefer blogs over vlogs and other video content. I might be a dinosaur, but I prefer actually reading interesting content and actual books.

  65. I like to read, I love language and words. I love that I can absorb thoughts shared while having a foot in the world, still. I’m listening to pheasants and crows chattering as I write this. Vlogs have their place, a guided meditation will always be better heard! And I love listening to your recordings of the Mabinogi, and and so much more. Music is a gift! I’ll always be a reader at heart, though.

  66. Personally I prefer a blog, as you can take your time to digest the content, rather than have to re-run videos.

  67. I still read them. The art of meaningful words is being lost over time. Many things have changed in this world and not always for the better. My husband & I love to listen to your songs and the stories they tell.

  68. I’m 61. So…. old.
I don’t have tiktok or insta or stuff. I like the written word.
    Blogs rule

  69. still read yours. always liked it. straight and to the point without any BS thrown in lol. truly, i do enjoy it. keep it up please! 🙂

  70. I’d much rather read and contemplate than be pitched at by short videos. Long thought out videos and conversations are another matter. I’d love to see more of those.
I’m happy to have found your blog today!
