Earth Hour this Saturday

At 8.30pm this Saturday lights will be switched off for an hour all over the world. The time is the local time for wherever you happen to be, so please do join this event in your own homes. If everyone did this it would send an undeniable message to governments throughout the world about our concerns regarding power, and climate change. earthhour

This is from the Earth Hour website: More than 2,000 cities from 80 countries across the globe have already signed up. In addition, a great number of iconic landmarks will be plunged into darkness, including Nelson’s Column, the Forth Bridge, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Table Mountain in Cape Town and Sydney Opera House. The London Eye, too, will be dimmed for the hour.

This is no small operation, nor is it a trivial effort. With all of these large monuments and attractions joining in, it really is worth just switching off the lights in your home, knowing that you are not alone in doing this.

For those in the South of England, I’ll be joining people in Addington Village Hall to hear speakers from a number of spiritual paths, and representatives from Greenpeace, talk about Earth Hour. Then as the lights are switched off at 8.30 I’ll be playing a candlelit acoustic set as my offering to the Earth. So if you can get along, please do come. But wherever you are, if you love this glorious Earth, just switch off your lights for an hour, and join in.

  1. While studying Judaism for several years and attempting to live a somewhat Jewish lifestyle, it was Shabbat (the Sabbath) that really opened my eyes to this (and quite frankly helped turn me to Paganism). We’d turn out lights, light candles, and let the Earth rest after we’d taken from It all week. For 24 hours we were giving back instead of taking – or at least giving rest.

An hour’s a wonderful start but a 24 hour period is something I’d like to get back into the habit of myself.

  2. I’d like to suggest to everyone to do this every Saturday morning. Just throw the breakers in the house and take a walk. The ice cream in the fridge won’t even start to get soft. Thanks for posting this article by the way.
