Cover Version Ideas?

So the release date of my new album Antlered Crown and Standing Stone has been confirmed for 17th November, so it’ll be launched at this year’s Witchfest International at Fairfield Halls, Croydon.

Traditionally each of my albums have had one or two cover songs included. Songs that have inspired me or songs that I simply love to sing. Raggle Taggle Gypsies, John Barleycorn, When I become the Moon, Willows Song to name just a few from the past. So I’ve turned my thoughts to potential covers for the new album. A few have sprung to mind already. Oak, Ash and Thorn, Corn Rigs, Harvest Dance (by Gwydion Penderwen), and maybe Jack in the Green by Jethro Tull.

However, as the title of my live album came from asking for suggestions, I thought I would open this to suggestions too (it was also great fun reading all of the ideas, daft or sensible, last time). There may be a gem suggested that I simply haven’t thought of. So, do you have any suggested cover songs for this or future albums that you think might fit in with my style of music?

Sensible or daft, have a go and leave your suggestions in the comments.

  1. I’d like to hear you do Corn King by Inkubus Sukkubus Dave – my two fave pagan artistes coming together!

  2. I vote for Harvest of The Moon by Steeleye Span – loving this song at the moment, and I love the message within it. Heather xx

  3. On of Louise’s and one she would love to perform one day is Steeleye Spans All Around My Hat. I personally think that you would do great justice to Jethro Tulls’ Ring Out Soltrice Bells. Cheers.

  4. Hi, Damh. I love your ‘Sons and Daughters of Robin Hood’ so I’m wondering if a Damh-style, pagan rewrite of Martin Carthy’s ‘Song of the Lower Classes’ might be good. And it’d be fun to record with all those harmonies.
Alternatively I think you’d do great covering anything by Vashti Bunyan.

  5. I don’t know if this daft or not but since you sing me to sleep most every night. I’d love to hear you sing The Welsh Lullaby. I think you know the one I mean. The opening verse is,”Sleep my child and peace attend thee, All through the night. Guardian Angels….etc”I’ sure there are other artists out there who have sung it. If not that then Loreena Mckennit’s The Mummer’s Dance.”

  6. I love the Idea of “Jack in the Green by Jethro Tull, but the ONE song that has alway gave me inspiration even befor I knew what Pagan was has been, “The Wizard” by Uriah Heep and I believe it will work wonders in your musical style.

  7. Cup of Wonder by Jethro Tull, perhaps? Regardless of which songs you pick, I can’t wait! =D

Also… if you’d ever want to cover a video, The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles would be fun. ^-^

  8. I would LOVE to see a cover (and forgive me if you’ve already done them, still learning your catalog) of A Health to the Company or If I Were a Blackbird. That would be most excellent.

  9. Dave, Maybe a little off the theme, but how about The Dolmens wondeful ballard ‘A Fishermans Song’or ‘Do not Weep’ by Eivor, a wonderful folk singer from the Faroe Islands (its in english).
